Description

JAMES G. BLAINE.
Freeman Woodcock Thorp (American, 1844-1922).
Oil on canvas.
22" x 27".
Signed at lower left Thorp 1887.

James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893) was a U.S. politician and a dominant leader of the post-Civil War Republican Party as primary champion of the "Half-Breed" faction. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Maine (1863-1876); Speaker of the House (1869-1872, 1873-1874); member of the United States Senate (1875-1882); Presidential candidate in 1884; and Secretary of State (1881, 1889-1892).

Please note that although the subjects were bitter opponents, Thorp was a friend to both James Blaine and Roscoe Conkling. Here is a rare opportunity to own "matching" period portraits of the leaders of both factions of the Republican Party- the "Half-Breeds" and the "Stalwarts." Please also consider the possible pairing of portraits of the 1884 Republican presidential ticket of Blaine & Logan.

Condition:
Signs of craquelure in the upper left corner. Minor paint chipping on borders outside image area. One 1½" long paint chip at upper left corner, easily restored.
