Description
[King Charles II]. Three Documents from His Reign, One Signed by a Woman. The first, a receipt of payment from "George Baron of London" to "Katherine Vaughan of the Parish of St. Martins...in the County of Middlesex: Spinster." Signed with "the mark of Katherine Vaughan / KV." One page of a bifolium, 8 1/8 x 11 7/8 inches, Middlesex; 1678.The second, one page of a bifolium, 7 5/8 x 11 7/8 inches, Hanchurch, [Staffordshire]; 1674.
The third, one page of a bifolium, 8 1/4 x 12 5/8 inches, [England]; 1680.
Charles II was the son of Charles I, who had been deposed and executed at the end of the English Civil War, leading to a twenty-one year period known as "the Interregnum" where England had no monarch. Though he had assumed the Scottish crown in 1649, he did not become King of England until the Restoration of 1660. His reign ended with his death in 1685.
Condition: All documents lightly toned with smoothed folds; minor edgewear and creasing; light, scattered staining; multiple light pencil annotations; each docketed on verso. Document dated 1678 with sealing wax on recto. Document dated 1680 reinforced at hinge with later paper; sections of pages two and four reinforced with contemporary paper.
