5 Issues of The London Gazette. Dated January 18, 1772 to April 4, 1775. London; 7 3/8 x 11 1/2 inches, four to eight pages each printed in two columns. Half-penny stamp in ink at bottom right corner of each issue. The London Gazette is one of the oldest surviving English newspapers, having first been published under the title The Oxford Gazette in November 1665. These issues include reporting on domestic and international affairs, as well as military enlistments, arrests, estate dealings, and advertisements. Includes:

Numb. 11215. Four pages, dated January 18 to January 21, 1772. Contains a front-page piece reporting the end of the Plague of 1771 and a pregnancy announcement for Queen Maria Carolina of Austria, the Queen of Naples and Sicily. Also includes a catalog of books printed at Cambridge University.

Numb. 11216. Four pages, dated January 21 to January 25, 1772. Contains a front-page announcement of the death of Princess Mary of Great Britain, the Landgravine of Hesse-Kassel.

Numb. 11243. Eight pages, dated April 25 to April 28, 1772. This extended issue contains a list of men in debtor's prison who were eligible for relief following the passage of "An Act for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors."

Numb. 11524. Four pages, dated January 3 to January 7, 1775. Contains a front-page announcement stating that quarantine procedures have been eased for cotton imports to Great Britain.

Numb. 11549. Four pages, dated April 1 to April 4, 1775. Contains a front-page report on the end of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, including a description of the Empress's masquerade ball held in celebration.

Condition: Each lightly toned with pinholes and remnants of previous binding at left edge. Numb. 11549 with staining, mostly at the right edge; two holes punched in left margin, not affecting text.
