Description

[Civil War]. Robert S. Garnett Clipped Signature ("R. S. Garnett"). Clipped signature, 1.5" x 4.25", no place; no date. An enviable and scarce signature from one of the first general officers to be killed in the war.

Robert S. Garnett (1819-1861) was an established and accomplished military man well before the outbreak of the Civil War, serving in the Canada Border Disturbances, garrison duty at Fort Monroe, and the Mexican-American War, where he received two brevets for distinguished service. He continued to travel and serve with the military, both in active service and training and pursuing a variety of projects (interestingly including the design that would become the Great Seal of California). When his native Virginia seceded from the Union, Garnett resigned his commission and joined the new Confederate military as Adjutant General of the Virginia Troops. He quickly rose through the ranks, but served on the front lines in Virginia where he and his men were blocked and harassed at every turn by the Union. He was ultimately killed in action at Corrick's Ford in July 1861.

Condition: Clipped from a larger document; slightly uneven edges.
