Description
Richard S. Ewell Autograph Letter Signed with George N. Hollins Letter Signed. Set of manuscript items autographed by two Confederate Generals: Richard S. Ewell and James Longstreet. Includes:Richard S. Ewell Autograph Letter Signed ("R. S. Ewell"). One page, 5" x 8", Spring Hill [Tennessee]; March 4, 1871. Letter addressed to Wade Hampton Reed in which he references the wound he received at the Second Battle of Manassas and informs the recipient to apply to General Early for more information on the Battle of Fredericksburg. He writes, in part: "... I would state that I was wounded & absent from the Army at the Battle... at Fredericksburg. I would think you would apply with great confidence to Genl. Jubal A. Early Lynchburg Va. who was at that battle & whose memory is usually very accurate." Ewell (1817-1872) was one of the first senior officers wounded at Fairfax Court House and later commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Manassas. At the Second, he was wounded in action when his right leg was shattered and required amputation. He returned home to his native Tennessee to convalescence for several months and was absent during the Fredericksburg fight. With accompanying engraving of Ewell. Together with:
[Civil War]. George Nichols Hollins Letter Signed ("G N Hollins Com. C.S.N[avy]"). One page, 7.5" x 9.5", Richmond; February 10, 1862. Letter of introduction addressed to Brigadier General John H. Winder. It reads, in part: "I have the honor to introduce to you Messers J. B. H. Fulton and G. R. Frazer who desire to return to Maryland to visit their families. I take pleasure in endorsing them as entirely loyal to our Government and men of high character and integrity..." Docketed. Hollins (1799-1878) was the Confederate naval commodore who commanded the "Mosquito Fleet" and won the Battle of the Head of Passes.
Condition: Light ink speckling to Ewell ALS. Hollis LS with slight paper attachment to one margin on verso with light soiling at bottom margin recto.
