Description
[Civil War]. Henry D. Clayton Autograph Letter Signed ("H.D. Clayton") to General Daniel H. Hill. Two pages of a bifolium, 10.25" x 8.25", Headquarters of Clayton's Brigade Near Chattanooga; November 3, 1863. Shortly after his participation at the Battle of Chickamauga, Confederate General Clayton wrote this lengthy and thoughtful letter to General Daniel D. Hill, expressing his appreciation for Hill's command and sharing day-to-day news from camp and war developments in the region. It reads, in part:"Returning to my command a few days ago I regretted to hear that you have left the command of our Corps and that I had not the opportunity of bidding you farewell. I have been in the military service since the 6th Feby 1861 and have never been under a commander to whom I and my command form so strong an attachment in so short a space of time. In camp we were not afraid to approach you, and on the field you were not afraid to approach or even go beyond us... Everything here has been in status quo since you left except the landing of the enemy beyond Lookout Mountain. Our division has moved a little to the west of where you left us... We have no indications of any future movements... There continues to be a great deal of rain, destroying the enemy's pontoons and our own across Chickamauga... Genl Hardee has reached here and taken command of Polk's corps. Genl Breckenridge continues to command ours..." With accompanying engraved portrait of Clayton.
Henry D. Clayton (1827-1889) had already established himself as a man of military and political means well before the outbreak of the Civil War, serving in the Alabama House of Representatives and later recruiting and organizing his own local militia. Following Alabama's secession, Clayton marched these same men to Florida to enlist in the army of the new Confederate States of America. After several moves and recommissions, Clayton quickly rose through the ranks and became commander of "Clayton's Brigade." The Brigade saw action at a number of key sites, including Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Clayton ultimately survived the War, resigning in April 1865 and returning home to his law practice. He eventually became President of the University of Alabama, serving until his death in 1889.
