Description
Three Revolutionary War-Era Issues of The Independent Chronicle and the Universal Advertiser. Bright examples of colonial-era newspapers featuring numerous articles on the fight for American Independence. They touch on standard war-time news, including troop and supply movements, and political happenings, with contemporary advertisements, including a reward offered for the capture of an AWOL soldier. All three issues feature the beautifully illustrated masthead taken after the "Sword in Hand" engraving done earlier by the noted silversmith, engraver, and American Patriot, Paul Revere.1) Boston; Thursday, March 19, 1778. Powars and Willis. Volume X [10], number 5001. Four pages, 10" x 15.5". Unpaginated and printed in three columns. This issue contains several notable articles, including the February 28, 1778 passage of a "constitution and form of government for the state of Massachusetts-Bay. Agreed upon by the Convention of said state, to be laid before the several towns and plantations in said state," passage of an act "for prescribing and establishing an Oath of Fidelity and Allegiance," and a passionate article calling for additional reinforcements for General George Washington's army that reads, in part: "Should this plan be neglected, America would lose the fairest opportunity that has ever been given her since the war... What madness to omit the opportunity Heaven has given us! What chains do we not deserve, who have not virtue enough to save outsides and country! ... Not a day's to be lost!"
2) Boston; Thursday, October 22, 1778. Powars and Willis. Volume XI [11], number 531. Four pages, 10" x 15.5". Unpaginated and printed in three columns. A notable extract includes the passage of an act in Massachusetts Bay "to prevent the return to this State of certain persons, therein-named, and others, who have left this State, or either of the United States, and joined the enemies thereof." The list of named-Loyalist spans over a page and a half of the paper. A contemporary ink annotation in the upper margin reflects how the previous owner received this news. It reads, "Tories Not to Return."
3) Boston; Thursday, April 1, 1779. Nathaniel Willis. Volume XI [11], number 554. Four pages, 10" x 15.25". Unpaginated and printed in three columns. The front and last page contain a lengthy article reprinting, in part, an English pamphlet titled "Considerations on the Mode and Terms of a Treaty of Peace with America." It was received by the American printer with flippant regard, as evidenced by his following line, "We give it entire to our readers, in full confidence that it will afford them an useful as well as high entertainment."
Condition: Rough edges. All with dampstaining along integral folds that extends into the first column. Contemporary ink ownership signatures to upper margin of each. 1779 issue with three scorch marks to margins that affect just a few words of text. Toned with scattered soiling and foxing throughout.
