Description
[Heinrich] Baldwin Möllhausen. Diary of a Journey from the Mississippi to the Coasts of the Pacific. With a United States Government Expedition. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858.FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Two volumes, 8vo. xxxii, 352; xii, 398 pages. Folding lithograph map titled "Map Illustrating Baldwin Mollhausen's Travels from the Mississippi Coast of the Pacific in the Years 1853-1854," nine colored chromolithographed plates, and three full-page woodcuts. Original gilt-decorated pebble-grained cloth with spine gilt-lettered.
The best account of Whipple's expedition to survey a railroad route to the Pacific, by the noted German naturalist and artist. The text contains excellent descriptions of Indian life. One of the classic accounts of the American West with unusually beautiful plates of the Southwest, including one Texas plate, "Camp of the Kioway Indians" (included in Holman & Tyler's Texas Lithographs, 1818-1900).
Condition: Spines are slightly darkened with minor shelf wear. Light foxing to text , with all plates in very fine condition.
