Jacob De Cordova. The Texas Immigrant and Travellers Guide Book...(First Edition.). Austin: Printed and Published by DeCordova and Frazier, Swanson's Buildings, 1856.FIRST EDITION. 12mo. 103 pages. 12mo, original dark brown blind-embossed ribbed cloth with title in gilt on upper cover. Housed in modern quarter morocco slipcase.
Famous Texas promoter De Cordova was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1808, settled in Philadelphia, and later became a merchant in New Orleans. In 1837, he moved to Galveston, lived for a time in Houston, then finally settled in Austin, where he established the Texas Herald. He is best remembered for his promotion of Texas immigration and mass accumulation of Texas land scrip. De Cordova travelled throughout the eastern U.S. and Europe as "Publicity Agent for an Empire," lecturing on the wonders of Texas and encouraging immigration.
Condition: Binding professionally recolored and touched up. Text with some very faint dampstaining to bottom half of text, some scattered light foxing and pale spots throughout, one gathering partially sprung, bookseller's stamps on front pastedown of Henry A. Moos, Bookseller & Stationer of San Antonio.
