Randolph B. Marcy. Exploration of the Red River of Louisiana in the Year 1852. Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, Public Printer, 1854.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 320 pages. 64 (of 65) lithographed plates by H. Lawrence and two folding maps. Text bound in publisher's blindstamped brown cloth, spine gilt-lettered; maps bound in original brown cloth covers, gilt-lettered on cover.

In 1852, Captain Randolph B. Marcy led the first expedition to discover the source of the Red River. From May 2 - July 28, Marcy and his men traveled throughout Texas and the Oklahoma territory. In his report, Marcy includes details on the topography, wildlife, and mineral deposits as well as information on the customs of the Native American peoples he encountered. Botanical plate 18 and Geological plate 2 were not issued.

The two maps are titled "Map of the Country Between the Frontiers of Arkansas and New Mexico," measuring 60" x 28.75", and "Map of the Country Upon Upper Red River," measuring 34.5" x 18." The former is one of the most informative maps of the region produced at the time. It offers great detail of the area from the Mississippi River to the Colorado. The latter is unique in that is covers an entire area that had been previously unexplored. Marcy includes his route of exploration, camp dates, Native American settlements, and topographical information.

Wagner-Camp writes, "Marcy's report abounds in topographical and geographical detail."

Condition: Text binding is slightly worn with corners bumped, pastedowns and endpapers stained. Lacking Geological folded plate 1, text has intermittent staining and foxing throughout. Covers of map case almost completely separated, pastedowns toned. Small holes and separations to folds, occasionally affecting the maps. The second map with heavier toning at folds and wrinkled in the upper right corner and small stain at the center of the map.
