Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) of New Hampshire joined the military young and quickly rose through the ranks of the Continental Army shortly after he organized and led a small militia to participate in the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1775, he joined the ranks of Colonel Benedict Arnold on the American expedition to Quebec; he was captured at the Battle of Quebec where he was detained for a year, after which he rejoined the fight at Ticonderoga and the Saratoga Campaign in 1777. His exceptional service had him commissioned once more among General George Washington's men at Valley Forge. He was appointed Deputy Quartermaster General in July 1781 and served under George Washington in Virginia. Dearborn continued to move in and out of Washington's service through the end of the war, both as soldier and quartermaster, and was ultimately present when General Cornwallis surrendered. His highly-commended service secured his appointment as Secretary of War by President Thomas Jefferson and a return to service in the War of 1812.

Washington's army at New York & to the troops of such Horse who marchd. again under his command to the state of Rhode Island in Dec. last...". Docketed, signed by Major Ebenezer Backus. An influential member of Connecticut society and politics, Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) was chosen as a delegate to the first and second Continental Congress and served on a variety of state and federal committees and courts. Ellsworth participated in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he played an important role in the adoption of the Connecticut Compromise. Though he did not sign the final document, he is considered among the framers of the Constitution and later wrote Letters of a Landholder and established a leading role in the Connecticut Convention to help promote ratification. After the war, he was among some of the earliest U.S. senators and was eventually nominated by President George Washington as Chief Justice of the United States on the newly established Supreme Court.
