[Benjamin Lundy]. The Life, Travels and Opinions of Benjamin Lundy, Including His Journeys to Texas and Mexico; with a Sketch of Cotemporary [sic] Events, and a Notice of the Revolution in Hayti. Compiled under the Direction and on Behalf of His Children. Philadelphia: Published by William D. Parrish, 1847.FIRST EDITION. 12mo. [4, blank] [5]-316 pages. Frontispiece mezzotint portrait, engraved map with original full hand-coloring, titled "California, Texas, Mexico, and Part of the United States." Contemporary sheep.
One of the few contemporary sources on pioneer printer Samuel Bangs. The colorful map shows the Nueces Strip and the Panhandle uncolored and with printed text: "Explanation. The part left uncoloured between the Rio Grande and Nueces & C. shows the old and new boundaries of Texas, forming the territory in dispute between the U. States and Mexico."
Streeter writes, "A most interesting Texas book because of Lundy's three journeys to Texas.... Lundy was a keen observer and in his journeys refers to many of the prominent Texans."
Condition: Rebacked preserving original spine label, some staining and light wear, front hinge starting. Some foxing and offsetting to the pastedowns and endpapers, text lightly toned with some minor foxing along edges and margins. Map mildly toned.
