Description
Francisco Fagoaga. Proclamation Announcing the 1828 Treaty of Limits with 1832 Amendment. Five bound pages, 7.75" x 11.5", Mexico City; December 1, 1832.Printed in two columns in English and Spanish with "Primera Secretaria de Estado. Departamento del Esterior" at head. The amendment extends the time in which both nations had to create a commission of surveyors to establish the boundary. Signed in type by Francisco Fagoaga as Foreign Minister.
It reads, in part, "The time having elapsed which was stipulated for the exchange of ratifications of the Treaty of Limits between the United Mexican States and the United States of America, signed in Mexico on the 12th of January, 1828; and both Republics being desirous that it should be carried into full and complete effect, with all due solemnity... The present Additional Article shall have the same force and effect as if it had been inserted word for word in the aforesaid treaty...in faith of which, the said Plenipotentiaries have hereunto set their hands and affixed their respective seals. Done in Mexico, the fifth of April, of the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty-one..."
First ratified in 1828, the Treaty of Limits recognized the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico according to the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty. Although the agreement was not set to enter into force until 1832, it was amended in 1831. Streeter notes: "This proclamation, dated at the end, Mexico, December 1, 1832, recites the text of the treaty concluded April 5, 1831, and its ratification by Mexico January 14, 1832, and by the United States April 5, 1832. Probably the delay to December 1 in the formal announcement was due to the internal conditions in Mexico." He cites only one copy, his own.
Condition: Lightly toned. Stains to the bound edges, affecting all five pages, occasionally affecting text.
