Description
Civil War Prisoner of War Carved Pipe, Florence, South Carolina. 1½" high x 2 3/8". Neatly carved around the top edge of the bowl Florace [sic] S. C. Prison and on the stem base Dec. 16 1864. Also carved with American shields, a star, flower with long leafy stem, and geometric designs on the stem base. Shows signs of having been smoked, long ago. Just one nick on the stem base that appears to have been there since the day it was made, otherwise perfect untouched condition. The Florence prison opened on the first Sunday of October in 1864, with most of the original prisoners having been transferred from Andersonville, which the Florence stockade/prison closely resembled. The prison remained open until February 1865 and during its existence some 15,000 - 18,000 Union prisoners passed through its gates, 2802 of whom would die, most of them buried as unknowns in the Florence National Cemetery. A touching memento of one of the most tragic chapters in American Civil War history.Auction Info
