Description
Exceptional Example of the Very Scarce Regulation US M1840 Pay Department Officer's Sword by Ames. Although possibly earlier than 1861 this specimen exemplifies the form in use from circa 1850 to the end of the Civil War. The brass hilt with separately affixed old English silver P. D. is about mint, retaining most of the original gilt. The 30" blade is ovoid in cross section and is interesting in that it clearly represents a stock pattern etching used by Ames for both the Medical Staff and Pay Department swords, incorporating a caduceus, with only the central panel, which in this case is etched "U. S. Pay Department" in script, being customized to the sword. Blade near mint with much original luster, just a few minor scattered stains. Ames Mfg. Co. engraved in script at the base of the reverse side of the blade. Brass scabbard also about perfect with mounts retaining most of the original gilt. Totally untouched with absolutely no dents or nicks, missing only the lower carrying ring, easily replaced. Ames Mfg. Co./ Chicopee/Mass. die stamped on the reverse of the scabbard at the throat. A really choice example of a very difficult to obtain regulation U. S. officer's sword.Auction Info
