Description
George Gick, 77th New York Vols: Great Silver Civil War ID/ Corps Badge accompanied by Associated Material. Gick enlisted September 1861 in Co. "E" of the 77th and mustered out December 13, 1864. He was promoted to corporal on December 25, 81862 and was wounded, shot "through right leg below knee," in the Wilderness on May 6, 1864 and again at Winchester on September 19, 1864, with a "gunshot wound through the left leg below the knee". Gick served with the regiment through the Peninsula, Antietam, Gettysburg, and numerous other engagements prior to the wounds he suffered in 1864: the lot is accompanied by a complete set of Gick's records. The badge is one of the most massive and impressive we've ever seen. Heavy plain silver ¼" x 1¼" bar at the top with T-bar pin back. ¾" wide suspensory ribbon, broken/ cracked but all there, with very heavy (1/16" thick) 2¼" silver 6th Corps badge (the 77th served in the 6th Corps from May 1862 to the end of the war). Edged with a 1/16" finely engraved border. Inscribed on the top arm "War of 1861 E. Co.", in the center, in old English letters, "George Gick", and on the bottom arm, "77th N. Y. S. Vols.", really exquisite work. The badge and the top bar in perfect untouched condition. Accompanied by two cartes de visite of Gick in his 1861 New York state uniform, four Civil War period letters to Gick with covers, and Bureau of Pensions claim receipt. Nice grouping and one of the most striking Civil War Corps badges we've ever seen.
