United States Colored Troops: Confederate Surrender Demand Yazoo City, Mississippi, Clerical Copies. One page, front and verso, 8" x 6½", March 5, 1864, "Hdqrs attacking forces, Attacking Yazoo City", in the hand of Frank E. Lovejoy, unsigned. The front of the copy is a letter from Confederate Brigadier General L. S. [Sul] Ross of Texas, demanding the surrender of Union forces under the command of Major McKee at the redoubt on the Benton and Yazoo City Road. The copy of the letter on the verso expresses General Ross's "...regret for the sake of humanity that you [McKee] do not find it consistent with your feelings of duty to your Government to surrender the redoubt...". Folds and light soiling, else fine.The Union troops, collected in two redoubts, one under McKee and the other under the command of Colonel James Coates, were repeatedly called on to surrender, but each time refused, even after McKee had been entirely surrounded. Coates posted his men in doorways and buildings and opened a telling fire on the enemy in the streets. Subsequently he brought up artillery from a gunboat and under the cover of its fire, charged, driving out of the Confederates in the town. The force surrounding McKee, on seeing their comrades giving way, fell back in disorder. During the night the Confederates withdrew. Federal losses were 31 killed, 121 wounded and 31 captured or missing, the larger part of which fell at Yazoo City.
