Albert Sidney Johnston: Letter Signed as Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas. One page, 7¾" x 9½", April 28, 1839, n.p. [Houston]. The letter, headed "Depat. Of War", reads, "This certificate entitles James B. McClain of Comp K., 1st Regmt. Of Infantry (Capt. Howard) to pay as a private from the 30th April 1838. To the 29th day of November 1838. When he transferred to the Cavalry Corps and from the later date to the 1st Jany 1839. When the Cavalry was transferred to the Frontier Regmt. of Infty by act of Congress and from the later date to the 12th April 1839. When he was discharged." Signed, "A. Sidney Johnston / Secretary of War". Professionally conserved with rice-paper lamination and de-acidification, thus very fine.Albert Sidney Johnston had a remarkable military career, graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1826 and serving as chief-of-staff of General Henry Atkinson during the Black Hawk War in 1832. Johnston resigned from the United States Army and moved to Texas. When Texas declared its independence from Mexico, Johnston enlisted as a private, but was soon picked by General Sam Houston to serve as his aide-de-camp. Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar named Johnston Secretary of War for the new republic. When the War with Mexico erupted in 1845, Johnston became commanding colonel of the 1st Texas Volunteers and took part in the battles of Monterrey and Buena Vista. He remained in the United States Army serving as commander of the Department of California. When Texas seceded from the union, Johnston resigned his commission and offered his services to the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis appointed Johnston a full general in the Confederate States Army. He was killed in battle at Shiloh, the highest-ranking casualty of the Civil War.
