Description
Large Grinning DogColima
Ça 200 BC-200 AD
Slipped and burnished ceramic
9¾" High x 18" Long
This lively dog with his attitude of charging ahead reflects his purpose as a guide for souls heading for the afterlife. A more practical aspect of the myth is the supposed use of these warm, hairless companions. They may have been destined to be served as food for the journey, sustenance for the souls of the departed. Ancient stories also describe their warmth as a source of comfort for both the living and the deceased. This dog with his broad grin and his perky ears would make a great companion.
