Description
American Eaglehead Infantry Officer's Straight Sword C. 1830 Somewhat unusual decoration we have not previously encountered. 32" straight blade, the fuller running open to the tip. Decorated for 1/3 its length with engraved military/floral motifs highlighted with gilt, on fire blue background. There are white etched panels, between the gilded motifs, featuring floral and scroll work. Blade generally with smooth dark patina, but retaining traces of the fire blue, much of the gilt, and the white etched panels are quite distinct. Absolutely no nicks, just some very old scattered light surface rust and one tiny spot with very light pitting. Hilt retains 25% of the original silver wash. Heart shaped langets with deep relief cast decoration. The reverse P knucklebow with very deep relief cast floral and scroll motifs. Crested eagle pommel. Fluted bone grip with nice mellow patina and one chip on the back side at the top, else excellent. An unusually decorative sword and the first example we've encountered. From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
