Mary Austin Holley. Texas. Lexington [Kentucky]: J. Clarke & Co., 1836. First Edition. 12mo, viii; 410 pages. Appendix. Rebound in blue leather with titles in gilt on the spine. Hand-colored, foldout map, Map of the State of Coahuila and Texas, measuring 13.25" x 11.5", affixed to the front free endpaper. Some paper loss to the left edge has been repaired. Top half of the title page is missing. Boards worn at the edges. Evidence of light waterstaining and foxing throughout. Small holes pages 99-100; 107-108; 111-112This is Mrs. Holley's second book on Texas, intended as an informative guide for emigrants to the area. Despite the similar title to her 1833 book, it is a completely different work; Jenkins calls it "a much more important book." While her first book was an enthusiastic endorsement of settling in Texas, this volume offers the reader a wealth of practical information necessary to everyday life and commerce. It includes specific detail about settlements and towns, business and banking matters, transportation and communication facilities, social niceties, and so on.
In her effort to promote Texas' independence and eventual statehood, Mrs. Holley also included in this volume a general history of Texas, a printing of the Texas and Mexican constitutions, and the text of her cousin Stephen F. Austin's farewell address of March 7, 1836, delivered at Lexington, Kentucky.
