Description

Confederate Used US M1855 .58 Caliber Percussion Rifled Musket, Springfield 1858, Captured at Roanoke [Island] Feb. 8, 1863. Fine overall untouched condition. All metal smooth and gray with absolutely no rust or pitting. Correct an original in every respect, obviously just as it was taken from the battlefield. Mechanically perfect, excellent markings including matching 1858 breech date. Excellent bore, however, it has been turned smooth, obviously during the period, to a depth of 1/4" from the muzzle, reason or significance unknown. Wood with nice dark untouched patina, showing some honest use with some scattered dents/scratches and a few minor small splinters along the ramrod channel. Neatly and deeply carved on the right side of the buttstock, "For/Gilbert Attwood/Boston/Feb. 8, 1862/Taken at Roanoke" and CGA carved at upper left. Absolutely authentic and 'of the period'.
Cornelius Gilbert Attwood enlisted on 5/19/61 in the 3rd Mass. Rifles as a Lt. but soon mustered out and on 10.21'61 he was commissioned as a Captain in Co. C of the 25th Mass. Vol. Inf. He was subsequently promoted to Major on 10/29/62, and was discharged for severe wounds he suffered at Cold Harbor, Va. 8/18/64. The 25th Mass. was heavily engaged at Roanoke Island on Feb. 8, 1862, the point of origin of this gun, suffering 48 casualties. The regiment lost a total of 161 men killed and mortally wounded during their term of service.
Interestingly we are currently engaged in negotiations with Attwood's descendants to consign other items still in the possession of the family, however, this gun, and Attwood's sword, were sold by another family member in 1999 at a local auction in Maine. The sword, which lists 25 battles on the scabbard, is currently in a collection in California.
A very nice M1855 with superb history.
