Description
Prussian Royal Standard, c. 1914, embroidered on silk, 13" x 13", with a ½" bunting fly and snap swivels. The standard is double-sided and may have been a car flag. The corners of the fly are re-enforced with extra stitching. The Prussian royal standard was originally designed by Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1843. It consists of a black Iron Cross with the heraldic Prussian eagle surmounted by the Prussian royal crown. The eagle is surround by the chain of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle. The arms of the Iron Cross reach the edge of the flag and are emblazoned with "Gott Mit Uns" (God With Us) and the date "1870" (the year of German unification and added in 1871). In each of the four red fields are three black heraldic eagles and one gold royal crown. The fly is marked "Bonner Fahnen Fabrick", a company founded in 1866 and based in Bonn. The standard is of extremely fine quality and is in excellent condition. It was brought home following the Second World War by an American airborne soldier.Auction Info
