Description

Grouping Identified to Lieutenant Franklin M. Johnson, Co. D 11th Maine Infantry. Group includes Volumes I, II and III of "Casey's Infantry Tactics", Van Nostrand, New York, 1862. Two of the volumes with period ink script ID on front leaf, "Lt. F. M. Johnson/Co. D 11th Me. Regt./Yorktown, Va." The other volume in similar condition and doubtless originally part of the group. All three volumes in good sound complete condition showing honest use. Also included is "Colton's Map Of Maine", brown cloth covered boards, 3 1/2" X 5" with gilt stampings. Advertising on inside front cover with hand colored map of Maine which folds out to 13 1/4" X 16 1/4" and dated 1861. Old tape reinforcing of several folds on the back but virtually undetectable when viewing the map from front. These period Colton maps from the period are quite scarce and very desirable. Also included is a very nice carte-de-visite of Johnson with backmark of A. M. Burnham, Bangor, Me. with Johnson's name in period ink script. Casual full length standing view with Johnson wearing frock coat with shoulder straps, sash, sword belt with over the shoulder sling, M1850 foot officer's sword and holding slouch hat. Fine condition and a very nice image. Johnson enlisted as a sergeant in the 11th Maine on 10/61, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1862 and resigned 7/13/63. Nice grouping with great period ID.
