Description

Civil War Officer's Cartridge Box, Sling, and Baldric Officer's baldric and cartridge box as used by elite militia units prior to and during the Civil War. 2 1/8" wide baldric/sling with alternating bands of red and gold bullion, black leather underside, partially detached. Large gilt brass buckle, adjusting loop and sling tip. The baldric device includes a die struck lions head with 3 brass chains suspended at the mouth, attached to a gilt brass shield with spread wing eagle with clouds and sun rays, one chain broken. The leather bodied box is bound with gilded brass, heavy tarred leather flap also bound with brass with 3 1/8" spread wing eagle affixed to the front with small wires. Brass finial closure, missing tab. Excellent overall condition with normal crazing on the box and minor wear to the sling. A very nice example of this scarce Civil War officer's accessory.
