Description

Confederate States Second National Flag. 53.5" x 36" silk 2nd National Flag. The design elements consist of 13 embroidered stars in the St. Andrew's pattern on the red, white and blue canton. The original part of the flag (i.e., dating from the Civil War) measures 34" x 33". Apparently, the right side and bottom became torn and tattered. The edges were finished off. This "core" flag was then sewn to a larger piece of silk material, approximating the original dimensions of the flag. There are four sets of cords attached to the left edge. The item was discovered in a barn in Nacogdoces, Texas, so it may have been used by a Texas regiment. There are some damp stains, pulls, minor loss and bleeding of the red dye. The colors are very strong. Considering its age and delicate nature, it is quite well-preserved. It is framed to museum standards under Plexiglas and is ready for display. Also included is a report from Howard Michael Madaus who compares the construction technique to others found to have been used in the Southern theatre of the War.
