Description
Apollo 11 moon-flown flag presented by Buzz Aldrin to his sister
Apollo 11 Flown American Flag on a Crew-Signed Presentation Certificate, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, with LOA. A 5.75" x 4.125" silk U.S. flag mounted to a 10" x 12" color certificate printed with the words: "This Flag Traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the First Manned Lunar Landing, July 20, 1969/ APOLLO 11/ July 16-24, 1969/ Armstrong - Collins - Aldrin". Affixed on the lower area is a 3" diameter Apollo 11 embroidered mission insignia above the crew's signatures in blue felt tip: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins" (an autopen example), and "Buzz Aldrin". At the very bottom are printed the immortal words Armstrong spoke as he stepped onto the moon's surface: "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Pristine condition. The flag is bright and exhibits only one tiny area of glue bleedthrough at lower right corner, mentioned for accuracy. The certificate is clean and bright; the signatures are bold, uninscribed, and with no hint of fading. The addition of an authentic Michael Collins signature could likely be accomplished at a show or through a private signing. This presentation piece was gifted by Aldrin directly to his sister Fay Ann, the person who originally gave him his famous nickname "Buzz."A Letter of Authenticity signed by Mrs. Potter's son (the executor of her estate) will accompany this lot.
