Description
Massive Confederate D-Guard Bowie Knife, Indigenous to Kilgore, Texas. 21.5" overall with 16.5" clipped point blade with false edge, 2" wide at the base, and 0.25" thick. Blade with deep dark aging with light pitting overall, but completely untouched. The heavy sheet iron hilt employs a double D-guard with a decorative curled quillon. The guard perpendicular to the blade is 0.75" wide, while the guard parallel to the blade flares in the middle to 1.5". The D-guards, and grip all intersect at the blade pean. The outboard guard is also attached to the inboard guard with two small, flattened, iron rivets. Hilt also with deep age patina and light pitting. The grip is unique in our experience, and is fabricated of two convex lead/ pewter plaques literally cast in place on the blade base, effectively turning the knife into a multi use weapon, as both a club and a knife. An incredible Confederate knife, and doubtless the most massive example we've ever catalogued, and in totally "in the black" as found condition.Auction Info
