Description

French Napoleonic 1st Empire Officer's Saber as Used By US Marine Major William Worthington Russell. (See catalog introduction) Very similar to FIG 142 in Peterson, with Peterson pointing out that these swords were quite popular with American Marine officers during the period, as they continued to develop their identity with respect to an actual regulation sword. Russell was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marines in 1843. It is worthy of note that a superb condition, high grade regulation mameluke hilt saber, known to have also belonged to Russell, exists in an important private collection, with this likely being an earlier 'working' sword carried by Russell.
The 33" blade is unmarked and undecorated . Generally smooth and light gray with just some scattered surface and some scattered minor nicks. All brass hilt is quite heavy with turned down quillon, langets bearing only rudimentary decoration, and D guard knuckle bow with line decoration on the edges, terminating at the pommel with a scroll. Lion face pommel with backstrap extending 2" onto the back of the grip. The grip is one piece of finely checkered wood with deep line decoration on the front and back. Just a few small very old chips at the base which detract nothing. All brass scabbard with leaf decorated ring mounts, brass rings, and decorative drag. Scabbard excellent with just a few scattered dents. Slotted at the throat to accommodate the langets. An attractive saber that doubtless saw use in Russell's hands in the early part of his career, including the Mexican War.
