Description

JUDAEA. Byzantine period, circa 450-500 CE. Bronze multi-spouted menorah oil lamp. A hollow-cast bronze lamp with D-shaped body 4.5 inches (12 cm) in length, with a flat bottom, loop handle to the rear; the upper face depicts seven nozzles to the forward edge and a stylized seven-branched menorah behind, forward of the filling hole, with a raised bracket for suspension. Overall green-brown patina with light earthen deposits, some losses to the middle section, otherwise intact.

From a New York collection, acquired in Israel in the 1980s.

Note: While cataloguing this piece, a distinctive metallic rattle was heard from within. This turned out to be a tiny, encrusted coin, a "nummus" or AE4 of the Late Roman / Byzantine era. Although heavily worn and patinated, it appears to be a coin reverse type issued by both Leo I (457-474 CE) and Zeno (474-491 CE), providing some unexpected and useful dating context for the lamp!
