JUDAEA. Second Temple to post-Bar Kokhba Period, circa 130 BCE - 150 CE. Bronze Mata incense shovel. Measuring 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) in length, with a flat, rectangular shovel blade with raised sides, the shoulders with leafy projections, the handle slightly offset and in the general form of a split architectural column, terminating in a raised pointed tip and an angled support. Very similar to the examples found in the Cave of Letters in the Dead Sea area, circa 1968.From the Barakat Biblical Collection, imported prior to 1982. Acquired in Israel.
Incense was important part of Jewish ritual in the Temple era and the aftermath of the Jewish War (66-70 CE). The fragrant smoke from incense was intended to purify the air of the sanctuary and to please the Deity. The Mata, or incense shovel, was employed in the ritual of burning and for removing the ashes from the altar. Such shovels acquired even greater importance after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, when the burning of incense at synagogues throughout the Roman world became a ritual of remembrance among Jews of the Diaspora.
