Description

Great Early War Confederate Enlisted Man's Kepi with Detailed Letter of Authentication From Noted Confederate Fabric/Uniform Expert Les Jensen From 1999. Jensen describes the piece as being a kepi of "French style" made of butternut colored wool and cotton combination. The cap body is made of two pieces seamed at the front and rear as is the band. The cap is lined with red and white cotton check print, the white now almost brown. The 15/16" sweatband is made of brown leather. The visor is a single thickness of black patent leather, 3 16" thick with oilcloth binding machine sewn in place. 1/2" chinstrap made of black painted oilcloth. The two sections 8" and 7" long respectively, terminating in oilcloth loops. The side buttons are small size hollow back golden age pattern with brass eye and unmarked. Jensen states, "The cap is classic early war shape, and probably was once gray in color. However, most Confederate gray dyes turned brown fairly quickly in the field, and the cap probably saw service in the present color." He further states that "this is a fine example of a Confederate enlisted man's kepi.....probably early war production and there is no sign of restoration." The kepi is in excellent and sound condition showing evidence of heavy use with scattered holes in the body that apparently are the result of that heavy use rather than mothing. A great early war Confederate enlisted kepi of unquestioned authenticity.
