Theodore M. Warner Navy Group including letters, a time book of the U. S. Steamer Mustang, newspapers, a court order, and others.Letters
This collection contains a group of fourteen letters all dated between March 22, 1862, and December 20, 1897. The majority of the letters are written to family telling of his time onboard the riverboat U. S. Steamer Mustang in the Trans-Mississippi Theater moving troops and cargo along the Rio Grande river or from the Assistant Quartermaster's Office in New Orleans.
One letter of note is addressed to his brother, "Fred," dated July 4, 1864, from Brownsville, Texas, written on the back of a copy of the Journal Extra, a one page supplemental to The Journal, a newspaper printed in Brownsville, Texas. It contains mostly news of the July 4 celebration to be held by Union forces in south Texas.
There is also a letter, dated December 20, 1897, on "Headquarters Army and Navy Post, No. 187, Department of Ohio, Grand Army of the Republic" letterhead inviting Warner for membership into the G. A. R. It reads in part:
"Dear Sir and Comrade;
The patriotic service you rendered the cause of the Union during the dark days of the Rebellion (1861-65) qualifies you for membership in the Grand Army of the Republic, into whose ranks none can enter but those having an unsullied record as a soldier for the Union."
Time Book
Bound in brown leather with "Time Book of Mustang" inscribed on the cover, it contains a list of all crew members, a record of all days aboard the Steamer Mustang from June 26 through August 6, 1864. Under the date August 8, 1864, there contains a complete inventory of the ship.
Others
The Journal Newspaper. Vol. 1, No. 14, four pages, 11" x 16", Brownsville, July 13, 1864. Union paper published after the capture of Brownsville and inscribed by Warner at the top margin in pencil, it reads: "From Ted. Please keep this as a relic. Also the Extra sent July 4, 1864. How are you old [illegible]." Page two contains an endorsement of the Lincoln-Johnson ticket for the upcoming presidential election. Contains various bits of new from the Trans-Mississippi region. Toned and slight chipping on the edges, but in fine condition.
The M. A. Hanna Monument Association Receipt. One page, 8.5" x 5.5", No. 66, Cleveland, August 10, 1904. It reads: "Received of T. M Warner, Ten Dollars. Subscription for the erection of a bronze statue of Senator M. A. Hanna in the city of Cleveland." Some toning aside, this is in very fine condition.
Western Reserve Historical Society Gift Receipt. One page, 8" x 10.5", on pink paper, Cleveland, December 30, 1873. It reads in part: "This Society has Received 'Certificate of Stock in the Grant Oil Company" Cleveland O. 1865 as A Gift From Theodore M. Warner, Esq."
Probate Court Record. Two pages, 8.5" x 13.75", typed, on "The State of Ohio/Cuyahoga, County" letterhead, January 31, 1895. Court document accepting the petition of adoption of Leona Agnes Havey, to Theodore M. Warner and his wife, Alice. Signed by judge Alexander Hadden. Some toning along the edges and small holes along the left margin from staples which have been removed. Small chip in the top left margin from the removal of same. Very fine.
Theodore M. Warner, then aged eighteen years, enlisted in the United States Army on May 26, 1862, and joined Co. E of the Eighty-fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 10, 1862. During his time in the regiment he traveled to Cumberland, Maryland, where they were tasked with defending against Confederate guerilla attacks and intercepting Confederate mail, smugglers, and spies. He mustered out with the regiment on September 20, 1862. Two years later he was clerk aboard the U. S. Steamer Mustang, moving troops up and down the Rio Grande river and then later at the Office of the Assistant Quartermaster in New Orleans, Louisiana.
