Description
Excellent Federal Artillery Gunner's Brass Level. This artifact is a very fine condition specimen of an arsenal - marked. Union artillery gunner's firing implement. Known as the 'gunner's level', the brass device was utilized by Federal military and naval gunners for sighting the piece. The gunner would elevate or depress the cannon tube to a convenient position for loading. With his level, a device with an integral spirit level, he determined the high point of the base ring and marked the point with chalk for use in aiming the piece with a breech sight or tangent sight. Later when permanent marks on the base ring heavy weapons fried from low level platforms and with improved sighting equipment rendered this level unnecessary.Constructed of heavy brass, this tool bears the maker's markings of " Eagle motif/ U.S./ Watervliet / Arsenal/ 1854." The device, of heavy, one- piece finely milled brass, is in the shape of modified pincer with handle. Brass handle is 2" wide and 5.5" long. Handle front curves outward into two, tapered, pincer-like curved prongs that form a shallow curve or scallop. Each prong terminated to a point that has a 1" long solid steel cylindrical bar attached to it. Flat base of the handle has the 'spirit level' screwed on, as well as sliding narrow steel pointer for use in making adjustments. All brass has acquired a beautiful, rich-toned bronze patina overall. Has just minor spots of oxidation. A fine, original, Civil War, arsenal-marked, brass gunner level to fill an artillery collection.
