Model of the X-15 flown by Neil Armstrong
X-15 NASA U.S. Air Force Rocket-Powered Aircraft Model, 1/15 Scale (40" Long), Tail Number 66672. An extremely impressive fiberglass model of the legendary hypersonic plane by North American Aviation, measuring 40" nose to tail, 18" across the wings, and 16" high while on its custom metal cradle stand. This was built from molds originally created by noted special effects designer Gene Young. The decals, by Retro Rocket, are perfectly accurate. This is an attention-grabbing model and would look great in your den or office. Excellent.The X-15 was flown 199 times between 1959 and 1968 by twelve different pilots; it still holds the official world record for the highest speed ever recorded by a manned, powered aircraft (4,520 mph / Mach 6.72). Eight pilots earned their Astronaut Wings by flying the X-15 at an altitude exceeding fifty miles and data gathered on these test flights was invaluable in future aircraft and spacecraft design. The aircraft represented by this model, X-15A 56-6672, made sixty-four powered flights and was piloted by future astronauts Neil Armstrong and Joe Engle.
