Thomas W. Ward Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 4", Austin; October 20, 1846. A manuscript invoice made out to Winfield Alford for payment to the republic of Texas for "11 labors of arable land @ 2.50" and for "15 [labors of] Pasture @ 1.20". Ward signs as commissioner of the Texas General Land Office to acknowledge receipt of payment. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.Condition: With flattened folds, otherwise fine condition.

Thomas William Ward (1807-1872) was born in Dublin, Ireland, and immigrated to the United States in 1828 and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, working as a carpenter. Hearing of the Texas revolution against Mexico, Ward joined the fight and participated in the siege of Bexar, where he lost his leg to a cannon ball wound. His use of a peg leg led to his nickname, "Peg Leg" Ward. Ward later returned to Texas and, due to his leg injury as a soldier in the Texas revolution, acquired rights to almost 8,000 acres of Texas land. During his career he served as the second commissioner of the Texas general land office, three times as mayor of Austin, and U.S. Consul to Panama.
Winfield Alford (d. 1878) was born in North Carolina and settled in Texas in 1832 and served under William B. Travis in the Texas revolution and afterwards worked as a farmer.
