Description
[Texas Ranger Thomas N. B. Greer]. Robert L. Rayburn Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 6.25", Montgomery County, Texas; December 18, 1841. A letter from Rayburn to T.N.B. Greer and Martin Copeland requesting pay for his Texas Ranger service: "Please send me my money that is coming to me for ranging if it has come on and you will oblige your friend. Mr. Butts has not got no order from W.W. Byers but it's coming to him. Butts he has not got an opportunity of seeing Byers to get and I have no doubt but it will all be right." Rayburn had served as a private in Greer's Montgomery County Minutemen rangers from April through October 7, 1841.On the back of the letter is an endorsement signed by Robert Buts (with his mark) dated December 22, 1841, which states: "Recvd. Of H. Henderson one hundred and eight dollars in promissory notes of the government which I promist [sic] pay over to R. S. Raburn [sic]."
Thomas N. B. Greer (? -1842) was born in Tennessee and moved to Texas in 1835. During the Texas Revolution he participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. After the revolution the president of the Texas Republic in February 1840 commissioned Greer to raise a company of Texas Rangers, known as the Boggy and Trinity Rangers, to protect and defend the frontier of the republic. In April 1841 he assumed command of rangers known as the Montgomery County Minutemen, which served until October 7, 1841. Both Rayburn and Martin Copeland were privates in the Montgomery County Minutemen. Greer was killed in action against Indian tribes in 1842. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.
Condition: The letter, written on lined paper, has irregular folds and creasing throughout; with ink impressions throughout from folding. Otherwise letter is in good condition.
