Description

Massive Catlinite Pipe Stem Belonging to Chief American Horse. Presumably this was of a purely ceremonial nature, as it seems far too heavy and unwieldy to have been used with a "smoking bowl" (length 16.5"). Original collection label, circa 1920-30s, reads "American Horse's Bowl and Stem" and the number 93 (or 98). However, those numbers do not conform to the 1930s inventory of the collection. It seems likely that the old sticker on the piece itself would be controlling in this instance. There is also what would appear to be a period inscription in black ink on one side, "American Horse 1888."

From the Rathbun Family Collection. See also Lots 51370 through 51412 for additional material from this collection.
