Description
John Stayton Autograph Letter Signed with Indian Content. Four pages of a bifolium, 8.25" x 12", February 5, 1860, Pleasanton. Addressed to his father-in-law Abraham Weldon. Stayton discusses how the US troops have been buying up their beef and forage supplies, along with the shortage of "Negro" labor (slaves). He also describes in detail a recent conflict with Indians from a nearby reservation:"...Our Neighbors of the Rio Frio Settlement with a party of M.S. dragoons had a fight on last Sunday with a party of reserve Indians on the Nueces R. They killed four and had two dragoons slightly wounded. The red rascals were taking it quietly stealing horses killing cattle and other like amusements preventing [illegible] as they slowly wended their peaceful way down the county. They were already getting together a respectable Cabalido as twenty two head of horses were captures besides those rode off by the Indians who escaped. These are the men the General Government feed and bait on our frontier keeping them constantly supplied with the good arms which they are constantly using to take the lives and destroy the property of peaceable citizens who are indirectly taxed to buy the verry [sic] arms which are used against them. Surely the experience of more than two centuries should have satisfied our law makers that fear alone could secure the observance of treaty by men controlled by no principle of honor or any sense of moral obligation but as there is no sense in this subject it does not attract any great attention."
Raids on Texas settlements would increase as the Civil War raged on, due to troops being pulled out to leave the frontier virtually unprotected. It was only after the war that defenses and treaties were reestablished. This letter is accompanied by its original transmittal cover.
Condition: Moderate toning throughout, usual mail folds. Separation has occurred along lower horizontal fold where paper was weakened; affects very little of the text. Other small separations at folds, else very fine.
