Description

RTV-G-4 Bumper 8 Rocket Launch NASA Photo, July 24, 1950, the First Rocket to be Launched from Cape Canaveral. A 10" x 8" glossy B&W photo showing the seventh rocket in this series launching at the Long Range Proving Ground (later re-named Cape Canaveral) with a small crowd of photographers nearby. The program aimed to gather scientific data and develop technology related to reentry and high-altitude flight. The Bumper rockets were essentially two-stage rockets, composed of a German V-2 rocket as the first stage and a WAC [Without Altitude Control] Corporal sounding rocket as the second stage. This configuration enabled the rockets to reach higher altitudes than either could achieve alone. The Bumper program was a pivotal part of the early history of rocketry and space exploration in the United States. The data and experience gained from these tests contributed significantly to subsequent advancements in rocket technology and the understanding of high-altitude flight dynamics. A rare image. Excellent.
