THE HOWARD WEINBERGER COLLECTION
Moon Money Tokens, Complete Set of Four: Green Cheese Penny
(MS67 RD NGC); Gremlin Dime (MS68 RD NGC); Moon Buggy Penny (MS67
RD NGC); and Swiss Cheese Nickel (MS65 NGC). Up until recently,
collectors knew little about these souvenir coins that were issued
circa 1970 in numerous ways- Gumball Prizes, Rocket Mail Covers,
and Storecards- in order to attract young people to the Space
Program. Howard Weinberger, one of the founding fathers of Space
Collecting, has recently researched this category of tokens. His
findings have been published on Chris Spain's excellent "Space
Flown Artifacts" website. The information below is from that site.
This lot contains one each of the four in the set, all graded and
encapsulated by NGC, as follows.Green Cheese Penny, Copper, NGC #4769078-003: The obverse features a cow jumping over the moon and states "Green Cheese Penny", while the reverse states "Moon Money" with the image of an accurately detailed Lunar Module.
Gremlin Dime, Copper, NGC #6465856-006: The obverse features a chaotic scene of the exploding Apollo spacecraft and a Gremlin and states "Gremlin Dime", while the reverse states "Moon Money" and "Odyssey Aquarius" with a cartoonish image of the Apollo 13 mission logo. The token is an Apollo 13 token.
Moon Buggy Penny, Copper, NGC #4753116-008: The obverse features a cartoonish image of the lunar rover driven by a cow with the lunar module in the distance and states "Moon Buggy Penny", while the reverse states "Moon Money" and an image of the Apollo 11 mission logo. Apollo 15 was the first mission to carry and use the lunar rover, which is what this token commemorates. We can be sure that this is an Apollo 15 token because an original unopened store card has been discovered as evidence.
Swiss Cheese Nickel, Brass, NGC #6465856-005: The obverse features a realistic face of Armstrong within a spacesuit and states "All American Boy Neil A. Armstrong", while the reverse states "Swiss Cheese Nickel" and "Man's first footprint on the Moon" with an image of a footprint on the lunar surface.
A terrific set of high-grade tokens from The Howard Weinberger Collection.
