Description

One of the very first laptop computers, flown on a Shuttle mission

Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-67) Flown Payload and General Support Laptop Computer (PGSC) Manufactured by GRID/ SAI Technology, with Original Carrying Case and NASA Documentation. A large (by today's standards) GRID laptop computer, 15" x 11" x 2" (closed) with a 9" diagonal screen and a single 3.5" floppy drive installed. On top is a label reading giving the part number (PGSC-715) and serial number (S/N 1012). Included is the original padded NASA carrying bag with a sewn-on label: "NASA Payload & General Support Computer PGSC Carrying Case. S/N 1012." Also included are copies of its origin in a 2002 GSA auction as well as documentation from NASA that it flew on STS-67 in 1995. The Payload and General Support Computer (PGSC) is a service used to support Shuttle and Payload on-orbit operations. The primary functions are command and display of non-critical payloads and additional crew information services. An excellent acquisition for the Space or Technology historian. A great item for display. Not tested. Appears fine. From The Howard Weinberger Collection.

Plaque from an apparently identical model at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville: "The GRiD computer is the first 'clamshell' design laptop computer. The Payload General Support Computer (PGSC) is a GRiD model 1530 with GRiD MS-DOS and an electroluminescent flat panel display driven by color graphics adapter (CGA)."
