Description
Frank Borman Signed Copy of Confidential White House Memo Regarding the Potential Fatalities of the Apollo 13 Crew, with Certificate of Authenticity from Novaspace. A copy of a memorandum to Nixon's Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman from the Deputy Assistant Dwight Chapin. One page, April 15, 1970, 5:45 PM. A grim reminder that plans were being discussed for the worst possible contingency of the Apollo 13 mission. Frank Borman, who was the White House's NASA liaison, has signed in black ink at the close: "If Haise, Lovell and Swigert died on Apollo 13/ Frank Borman/ Apollo 8 CDR". It reads as follows."RE: Apollo 13
"I have talked to Frank Borman concerning a contingency plan for Apollo 13 in case of a disaster.
"It is Frank's feeling, and I concur, that the President should leave for Houston immediately upon word of a disaster.
"Arriving in Houston, he would go to the Mission Control Center and talk to the men of NASA and reaffirm his support of them and compliment them on their tremendous efforts to bring Apollo 13 home.
"Next, it is recommended that the President proceed to the homes of Lovell and then Haise to pay his personal sympathy and that of the country to the families.
"After the visit to the Lovell and Haise homes, the President would go immediately back to the airport and return to Washington. Frank does not see any reason why the President should have to go to Denver to see Mr. and Mrs. Swigert.
"In terms of presenting the Medal of Freedom posthumously to the Astronauts, it is felt that this should be done at a later time. It could be done in a special ceremony with the families attending in the President's Oval Office."
The first time Heritage has offered this item. Very fine.
