Description
Ex. Bruce McCandless II
Skylab II (SL-3) Flown Cuff Checklist and Tether Segment on
Presentation Plaque from the Crew, Directly from the Personal
Collection of Bruce McCandless II. Outstanding presentation
comprised of a cuff checklist with twenty-three thin plastic
printed sheets that have been spiral bound and attached to 6.5"
curved metal wrist band with engraved "P/N SEB 33100302-303, ASSY,
S/N 1049". Each page measures 3.625" x 4.25", and is separated by
tabs with the following titles: "Undock", "Single Axis Cal", "Limb
Motions", "Baseline", "Discon LSU", "HHMU Guide", "HHMU Transfer",
"HHMU Baseline", and "Docking". Attached to the wrist band is a
Velcro strap with "P/N SEB12100030-201", and "S/N 1099 ASSY"
printed on outside. An approximately 12" long segment of tether is
also adhered to the 12" x 10" plaque along with embroidered mission
patch and small plate stating: "To/ Bruce/ With Appreciation For
Your Support/ Of Skylab Mission II", along with facsimile
signatures of the crew comprised of Alan Bean, Owen Garriott, and
Jack Lousma. These checklists design were developed during the Apollo program, and examples from Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 have sold for $206k and $744k, respectively. This example was flown for an incredible 59 days.
Throughout the Skylab program the crews performed many experiments on McCandless's M509 Astronaut Maneuvering Equipment. These experiments eventually led to McCandless himself testing the unit on an untethered spacewalk performed in 1984 on STS-41-B (Challenger). A similar checklist used aboard Skylab III currently resides in the Smithsonian. Great presentation of flown material gifted to the man responsible for the MMU. Very fine.
