Description

Walt Cunningham Typed Letter Signed Regarding His Heroes Growing Up, with Color Photo. One page, 8.5" x 11", dated December 13, 1989, to a correspondent who had apparently inquired about his childhood heroes (full text below), signed at bottom in black ink: "Walt Cunningham". Included, for purposes of display or matting, is a glossy color print of Cunningham in full Apollo spacesuit. Very fine.
"Dear Mr. Stanhope,

"Thank you for your letter of October 16th. Due to the number of such requests, I rarely take the time to personally reply. However, your query about childhood heroes touched a responsive chord. While I do not feel uncomfortable in that role today, I am, nevertheless, still surprised at the public's perception in these matters.

"Who was my hero growing up?

"My hero's have always been individuals (sometimes, groups) who achieved their self determined objectives against odds over which they were not expected to prevail. Usually people who use both their brain and their brawn. Another characteristic is the recognition that it is not how long you live but how you live your life that counts; and that there are far worse fates to suffer in this world than dying.

"They were generally not the organizational or institutional "heros" such as the Astronauts were/are. E.g. Admiral Peary, the first man to the North Pole; the man and woman making the only non-stop flight around the world; the American olympic gold medal hockey team and many others.

"For me, growing up, all of these characteristics were engendered in Charles Lindbergh when he made his first non-stop flight across the atlantic. As a result of my own experiences, I was fortunate to meet Charles Lindbergh on several occasions.

"Charles Lindbergh's philosophy was epitomized in a 1969 statement of his; "As a student pilot at the age of 20, when aviation was much more dangerous than it is today, I concluded that if I could fly for 10 years before being killed in a crash, I would be willing to trade an ordinary lifetime for that experience."

"I hope this has been helpful to you.

"Sincerely,
[signed] Walt Cunningham
Walter Cunningham"
