Description
APOLLO 15
Spacecraft ID plate from Apollo 15's Lunar Module Falcon
Apollo 15 Lunar Module Flown Spacecraft Identification Plate
Display Originally from the Personal Collection of Lunar Module
Pilot Jim Irwin. A metal ID plate of 5.25" x 1.75" mounted to a
10" x 11" shield-shaped wooden display plaque beneath a metal
die-cut representation of the lunar module. Engraved on the plate
from the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. is the following:"APOLLO XV LUNAR MODULE - 10"
"COL. D. SCOTT, LT. COL. J. IRWIN, MAJ. A. WORDEN"
Part No. "LDW 280-60000-1" / Serial No. "001"
Dsgn Cont No. "FALCON-ENDEAVOUR" / Contr No. "NAS 9-1100"
"LAUNCH DATE 7-26-71" / "SPLASHDOWN 8-7-71".
Mfd. By Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp.
Bethpage, New York U S FS Code 26512
Another engraved plate mounted on the plaque reads:
"APOLLO XV LUNAR MODULE - 10
'OH, SHE WAS THE BEST'
COL. D. SCOTT - LT. COL. J. IRWIN - MAJ. A. WORDEN"
The "she was the best" comment was adapted from an exchange between CapCom Bob Parker and CMP Al Worden as the lunar module was jettisoned from the command module in lunar orbit as seen in this excerpt from the official transcript:
07 11 30 17 CMP Al Worden "And, it's away clean, Houston."
07 11 30 19 CC Bob Parker "Roger, copy. Hope you let her go gently. She was a nice one."
07 11 30 25 CMP Al Worden "Oh, she was at that."
It was a tradition to fly three of these Lunar Module Identification Plates to the lunar surface on Apollo missions and then return them to Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. where they were mounted on wall plaques and one was presented to each crewmember. An extremely significant part of space history, worthy of inclusion in the finest private or institutional collections. Some scratching to plaque, overall fine.
