Description

Ex. Dick Scobee

Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-41-C) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 3F, with a Signed Presentation Certificate from Mission Pilot Dick Scobee to His Brother's Family. This 1.5" diameter slightly odd-shaped sterling silver medal was one of only forty-six flown (of 155 minted) aboard the fifth mission of Space Shuttle Challenger (eleventh Shuttle mission overall) with crewmembers Robert Crippen, Dick Scobee, Terry Hart, James van Hoften, and George Nelson. This mission captured and repaired the "Solar Max" satellite and deployed the LDEF (Long Duration Exposure Facility) apparatus. The obverse features a helmet visor of an astronaut on EVA picturing the Sun's rays, the Challenger deploying the LDEF and another astronaut on EVA repairing the "Solar Max"; the crew's surnames are around the edge. The reverse also includes the crew's surnames along with the engraved information, Launched "April 6, 1984" and Landed "April 13, 1984 / RW17 Edwards AFB CA". The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A rare medal, only the third example Heritage has offered. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Dick Scobee's brother reading in full: "I certify that this Robbins medal flown on Challenger flight STS-41-C, was owned by Dick Scobee who served as its Pilot, and who commanded the tragic STS-51-L mission two years later. Sterling silver Robbins medal is marked with low serial number 3 F on rim, one of only 46 Robbins medals flown on the mission out of 155 minted. The sterling and Robbins hallmarks also appear on rim. Reverse of medal features the names of the astronauts along with "Launched / April 6, 1984 / Landed / April 13, 1984 / RW17, Edwards AFB, CA.", and the front features pictorial highlights of the mission, including an astronaut repairing the "Solar Max" satellite. Medal measures 1.5" in diameter, housed in its original Robbins medal case. The medal remained in Dick Scobee's estate until it was consigned to Nate D. Sanders Auctions."
