Description
Presented by Steve Jurvetson: Originally from the Collection of Jim Ruddy, with His Original Provenance File.
Apollo 12 [Lunar Module] Flown "Butterscotch Pudding, #9029"
Space Food Packet, Originally from the Personal Collection of
Mission Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, with His Signed Letter of
Certification, in Framed Display. A 3.5" x 14.75" vacuum-sealed
packet containing a quantity of a powdered product with a tube at
the top for water insertion and a germicidal tablet. The label
reads: "9029/ Butterscotch/ Pudding/ 4 oz. cold water/ 5-15
minutes" giving the instructions on how to make this edible in a
space environment. The pouch is mounted on a blue suede mat with a
signed Letter of Certification on Alan Bean's stationery stating
that this was "Flown To The Moon Aboard Yankee Clipper, November
1969, Alan Bean, Apollo 12 LMP" (see notes below). Framed to an
overall 13" x 32". Very fine. The intense research performed by Mr. Ruddy to the background of this item has allowed us to declare that this was almost certainly lunar module flown, despite the LOA from Alan Bean. Many interesting facts were uncovered in Ruddy's research (full file included) including that this food packet, along with four others in a shadow box frame with the printed inscription: "Sailed with Yankee Clipper and Intrepid to the Ocean of Storms Nov. 1969", was originally intended as a house gift from Bean to Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis in 1970. After a change in the political relationship between Nixon and Onassis, it was suggested that Bean not accept the invitation to visit Onassis. At that point, the frame including "Toasted Bread Cubes, #9023", "Beef Pot Roast, #9027", "Cream of Chicken Soup, #9028", "Butterscotch Pudding, #9029" (this item), and "Grapefruit Drink, #9030", was hung on the Bean family's living room wall until it was offered for sale at Superior Galleries in November 1993 (Lot 1070). The shadow box did not sell at that time and was broken up and the pieces dispersed separately at later dates. In August 2000, Bean sold the "Cream of Chicken Soup, #9028" with an LOC (copy included) stating that it had been "flown to the surface of the moon in Intrepid." This would seem to indicate that, since all the items in the original Onassis frame were proclaimed to be LM flown, this item would also. We ask that the bidder decide if the above evidence is strong enough to upgrade this piece from CM flown to LM flown. We feel that a strong case is made in the accompanying file. In any respect, this is a beautiful framed piece worthy of the finest collections (tow of which it has graced already). Note that the opening bid reflects a price consistent with a CM flown relic from the second manned moon landing presented in such a handsome display.
