Description
Skylab I (SL-2), Skylab II (SL-3), and Skylab III (SL-4) Flown American Flag on Crews-Signed Presentation Certificate. An extraordinary presentation honoring William R. Whipkey for his support of the Skylab program, featuring a U.S. flag carried aboard America's first space station during 1973-1974. The flag is affixed to a printed presentation sheet that depicts the Skylab space station, along with the three official crew mission emblems for Skylab 2, 3, and 4. Text reads: "Presented to William R. Whipkey for your 'extra effort' in making the Skylab missions successful..." At lower left are the authentic signatures of all nine Skylab astronauts (which includes two moonwalkers):Skylab I (SL-2): "Charles Conrad Jr", "Joe Kerwin", & "Paul Weitz".
Skylab II (SL-3): "Alan L Bean", "Owen Garriott", & "Jack Lousma".
Skylab III (SL-4): "Jerry Carr", "Ed Gibson", & "Bill Pogue".
The flag itself measures approximately 5.75" x 3.875" and remains bright and clean. The presentation sheet, measuring 14" x 11", is printed with a bold depiction of the Skylab workshop and titled at right: "Carried Aboard the Skylab Space Station 1973 - 1974." Very fine.
Items of this type were presented in very limited numbers to NASA personnel and contractors who played essential roles in the Skylab program's success. Complete sets of signatures from all Skylab crews are rarely encountered, and the combination with a flown flag makes this an especially desirable artifact.
