Description
Apollo Lunar Excursion Module Early Prototype Model. An outstanding large-scale model of an early concept of the Lunar Module. Constructed of lightweight metal and balsa wood, this example is larger than most early models, with an overall size of 19"x 19" x 11". This model was likely produced between 1961 and 1962 when NASA was contemplating three different options for a moon-landing spacecraft. NASA was forced to work incredibly quickly to deliver on President Kennedy's desire to successfully land on the moon in the 1960s. Choosing between a direct ascent, Earth-orbit rendezvous, and Lunar-orbit rendezvous, the Lunar-orbit option was eventually selected, represented by this piece. It is intriguing to see the many similarities between the model and the finished product. Aspects such as the landing configuration and thrusters did not change dramatically after this was produced. Has age-related wear, including paint chipping and loss to some areas, including thrusters. Overall very good.Auction Info
